A to Z

What if I ate lunch following an Oulipo-esque constraint?
What if I ate only foods beginning with each of the letters of the alphabet in turn.

A - avocado, aubergine, apple .......
B - blueberries, beef ......

For some reason I started this experiment on R, with raspberries and rollmops. So I guess tomorrow could be sate / satay, or sole or satsumas or a combination of any or all of those or other S foods.

banoffi pie

I just found out that banoffi pie was created by Ian Dowding and Nigel Mackenzie, in 1972.

Dowding is quoted as saying that one of his pet hates is banoffi pie with biscuit bases.

Here's the link to the original recipe:

Asparagus

I asked the woman at the asparagus stall why the thick asparagus shoots were pricier than the thin. She said that it was all down to customers preferring them.

Demand.

On Sunday we'll have half a kilo of medium sized asp. with beenham.

I hear that the best place to buy Bossche Bollen is Cafe de Groot, Stationseweg in den Bosch naturally.

Rollmops

I like the idea of food presented in inappropriate packaging, like rollmops in a crisp bag (see-through, of course) or in a workman's tool box or wrapped in polystyrene.

Or presented in a standard jar which has the wrong colour or design (e.g. red and orange swirly stripes instaed of variations of blue and fishy logos).

Rollmops are tasty and I believe they are a good hangover cure.

roast pork belly and on-divey stomp

I cooked the chunk of pork belly in boiling water for fruve minutes, trimmed the fat, scored the remaining thin layer of fat and rubbed in 5 spice powder, crushed sechuan pepper, salt and pepper.

Thence I plac'd it fat side up on a bed of tin foil and did roast it in hot oven until it ws crunchy.

I serv'd it on on-divey stomp, with hard boiled egg slices.

What kind of sauxce might work with this?

Schlossberger

Schlossberger

De naam van deze kaas is ontstaan omdat naast de kazerij een bergruïne
(Schlossberg) staat. Het recept van deze kaas is al vier generaties oud. De
smaak is licht boterig met een aangename lichte hazelnootsmaak.

Pancakes

I very rarely measure out the ingredients for pancakes.

I have started to fold them in half then half again rather than cut them into pieces from flat. This makes them hand-holdable but there is the added risk of spilling the filling, in my case, often apricot jam.

Which I first experienced in a crepe in Paris.

Tonight I will cook pasta. With ostrich?

Omar's coming.

Burek

Börek / Burek is fantastic with a yoghurt drink. I buy burek from the Turkish shop near the Big AH. One with cheese, one with minced lamb and this wonderful salty yoghurt drink.

scallops

on potato pancakes with black pudding and a spring onion and tomato salsa, seasoned with plenty of lemon juice and salt

scallops make my taste buds gallop along the sand, erect, with the sweet spray in my face
black pudding anchors me to the source of all pretension, the giant turtle
and the lionised pummel.
oh my fry

ostrich!!!

I have made a recipe for ostrich steak.

tagliatelle (I added chopped up rocket and fried cherry tomatoes for sweetness -I suppose parsley would work in place of rocket)

laid half on top of mustard bechemel

a half piece of chicory (slowly braised) on the side

ostrich, fried and sliced in strips arranged in a fan over the pasta and just peeping
into the sauce

really delicious

too many bitter elements?

perhaps substitute fennel for chicory

Moroccan pancake

Discovered this at the weekend; it's not strictly speaking a pancake, more like dough, layered and fried in a pan. It's about 40 cm square.

Great as a kiddie snack, now I must look into savoury combinations.

Available from RIF in Tilburg.

Food

This blog is about food.

If you are buying a packet of tortillas in a supermarket, Plus for example, buy a brand from Turkey. They are a lot cheaper than Old El Paso.

Don't buy cheap cheese.

Buy your meat at the butcher.

I know this will never happen, but please, if you are an adult, stop eating hagelslag for breakfast.
